Photo-Protection Trial (NB-UVB vs. Placebo) in High-risk Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients

The purpose of this study to evaluate the translational application of the safe and effective treatment of Narrow-Band Ultraviolet light B-band (NB-UVB) to high-risk COVID-19 patients in an effort to improve their immune and hemostatic imbalance to increase survival and improve outcomes.

PHOTO-IMMUNOLOGY

EFFICACY OF PHOTO-IMMUNOLOGY

Photo-Immunology has been a leading treatment for 3 major auto-immune diseases: lupus vulgaris (a type of TB), psoriasis, and Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD). The cytokine storm in COVID-19 is very similar to the one in GvHD and provides us cautious enthusiasm for its immediate use and potential benefit.
Photo-Immunology therapy has limited clinical risk and has been saving the lives of leukemia patients with GvHD for more than 20-years and it is effective in over 50% of patients*. It is FDA-cleared for other indications and is located at clinical centers throughout the world. A single Photo-Immunology therapy unit can treat 50 patients a day every day. Treatments last less than 5 minutes.*

FACTS ABOUT UV LIGHT

UV Light & Our Biology
The impact of UV Light on our biology is so important that it is broken into 3 distinct spectrums (UVA, UVB and UVC).
UVB
We are focused on the immune-modulating properties of UVB.
UVB & Our Immune System
The effects UVB on the immune system are robust and initiated by activation of the vitamin D receptor primarily on monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs).

UVB Treatment ≠ to Melenoma
"Multiple studies specifically assessing the carcinogenic potential of NB-UVB did not find an increased risk of skin cancer in treated patients. Unfortunately, there are few prospective studies assessing the risk of skin cancer in patients with psoriasis treated with NB-UVB. Because of the theoretical possibility of this risk, physicians should use caution in prescribing NB-UVB for patients with a history of melanoma, multiple nonmelanoma skin cancers, arsenic intake, or exposure to ionizing radiation." From The Joint American American Academy of Dermatology 2019
